In grade 11, students will begin this busy year by taking the PSAT in October. Stonington High School registers all students for this test which is the practice version of the SAT. There is no charge for our juniors to take this test. Students will attend an informational assembly and will receive prep books prior to taking the test. Results are distributed in December. Students should analyze their results with their guidance counselor and determine if additional preparation may be needed prior to taking the SAT. Also, during the same month, juniors will attend the SHS College Fair. Prior to the fair, students will attend an assembly which introduces them to the college fair format. Next, in December, all juniors will participate in a College Workshops, facilitated by the SHS Guidance Department and held during all junior English classes. During this workshop, students will receive handouts and information related to the following: college admission factors, visiting colleges, developing your college list, SAT/ACT tests, NCAA, letters of recommendation and more! Students are encouraged to bring this information home to be shared with their parents and families. Following these workshops, an evening meeting will be hosted in January, which will introduce parents to this same information. Prior to the end of junior year, students should have a minimum of one meeting with their guidance counselor to discuss their post graduate plans. It is very important to include the guidance staff throughout this process!
